It tells a story about the lives of naval aviators, who are pilots for the Navy. The film follows Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as he trains at a special school. This school is called the United States Navy's Fighter Weapons School, or Top Gun. The movie is known for its exciting flying scenes and its very popular music. It became a huge success and is now considered a cult classic. Even the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in 2015.

The story centers on Maverick and his radar intercept officer, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw. They fly a fast jet called the F-14A Tomcat. During their training at Naval Air Station Miramar, Maverick faces many hard challenges. He often breaks rules and struggles to work well with a team. One very sad moment happens during a training flight when Goose is killed. This loss leaves Maverick feeling deep guilt and makes him want to quit. He must find his confidence again to become a great pilot.

The idea for the movie came from a real magazine article. An author named Ehud Yonay wrote "Top Guns" for California magazine in 1983.

To make the film feel real, one of the writers attended declassified classes at Miramar. He even went on a flight in an F-14 to learn more. Director Tony Scott was chosen to lead the project. The producers also worked closely with the U.S. Navy to film the jets. This helped the movie show real aircraft and flight crews.

Top Gun was a massive hit at the box office. It cost $15 million to make, but it earned $357.4 million around the world.
