The words top and bottom describe active and passive roles. They do not describe who is physically on top of someone. A top is a person who gives stimulation to another. A bottom is a person who receives that stimulation. Some people can do both roles during their play. These people are called switches. You might also hear them called versatile people.

There are different ways to look at power in these roles. Some people focus on physical actions during their play. Others focus on psychological power, which is about the mind.

A dominant person takes a superior position in a relationship. A submissive person takes a subordinate position. Dominants can be called doms or dommes if they are female. Submissives are often called subs for short. These roles are about a power exchange between people.

It is important to know that these roles can overlap. A top is not always a dominant person. A bottom is not always a submissive person.

In the past, people found other ways to show their interests. This happened in some parts of America during the 1970s.
