A top is a person who acts. They may give sensation to another person. A bottom is a person who receives. These words do not mean who is physically on top. A switch is a person who can be both. Some people call a switch "versatile."

Other people use power in their play. A dominant person has control. A submissive person gives up control. These roles are different from being a top or a bottom. A top might not be a dominant person. A bottom might not be a submissive person.

Some people use physical power. Others use mental power. This is called a power exchange. In all play, people must use respect. They must also talk and agree on things first. This keeps the play healthy.
