Braxton’s musical foundation was built within her family and her religious upbringing. She was born on October 7, 1967, in Severn, Maryland. Her father, Michael Conrad Braxton Sr., was a Methodist clergyman and a power company worker. Her mother, Evelyn Jackson, was a former opera singer, a cosmetologist, and a pastor. Growing up in a strict religious household provided Braxton with a musical advantage. She noted that the church pulpit served as a stage for her. This environment helped her develop a "finer-tuned ear" for music. She first gained performance experience by singing in her church choir.

Her professional path began with her four sisters: Traci, Towanda, Trina, and Tamar. Together, they formed the R&B group known as The Braxtons. The group signed with Arista Records in 1989 and released the single "Good Life" in 1990. Although that single did not find major success, it caught the attention of important industry figures. Producers Antonio "L.A." Reid and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds recruited Braxton for solo work. They had originally written the song "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" for Anita Baker. However, Baker suggested that Braxton record it instead. This led to Braxton signing with LaFace Records to begin her solo career.

Braxton’s debut studio album, released in July 1993, was a massive commercial milestone. The self-titled album reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It sold over 10 million copies worldwide and earned 8× platinum certification in the United States. The album produced international hits such as "Another Sad Love Song" and "Breathe Again." It also earned Braxton three Grammy Awards, including the award for Best New Artist. Her success continued with the 1996 album Secrets. This album reached number two on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 15 million copies internationally. It featured the hit "Un-Break My Heart," which spent eleven consecutive weeks at number one on the Hot 100.

Despite her musical triumphs, Braxton faced significant personal and professional challenges. Following the success of her second album, she engaged in a legal dispute with her labels, Arista and LaFace. This conflict eventually led her to file for chapter 7 bankruptcy. She also navigated various health issues and contractual disputes during the release of later albums. These included the albums Snowflakes, More Than a Woman, Libra, and Pulse. However, she remained resilient in her career. In 2014, she released the duet album Love, Marriage & Divorce with Babyface. This project won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

Braxton also expanded her talents into theater and film. In 1998, she made her Broadway debut playing Belle in the musical Beauty and the Beast. This was a historic moment, as she was the first Black woman to play Belle on Broadway. During her time in the production, composer Alan Menken wrote a new song, "A Change in Me," specifically for her. She also made her film acting debut in the 2001 comedy Kingdom Come. This movie featured an ensemble cast including LL Cool J and Whoopi Goldberg. The film was a modest success, earning $23.4 million at the worldwide box office.

In recent years, Braxton has become a prominent figure in television. She competed in the seventh season of the reality series Dancing with the Stars. She also served as an executive producer and star of the reality series Braxton Family Values. This show aired on We TV from 2011 to 2020. Additionally, she executive produced the spinoff series Tamar & Vince, which starred her younger sister, Tamar. Through music, acting, and television, Braxton has maintained a diverse and enduring presence in the entertainment industry.
