Tongzhi Restoration

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, the Qing dynasty in China faced many problems. Wars and big fights made the country weak. Leaders wanted to make China strong again. This was called the Tongzhi Restoration. It was named for the Tongzhi Emperor. His mother, Empress Dowager Cixi, helped lead the work.

Leaders like Zeng Guofan and Li Hongzhang started new projects. They wanted to improve the economy and the government. In 1861, they made an office for talking to other lands. They built schools for English and French in 1862. They also built places to make weapons and ships.

These new tools helped in some fights. But the tools did not work well against European powers. In 1870, they built a factory for machines. In 1872, students went to the United States to learn. Some experts say these changes were not enough. The reforms did not change the old ways of thinking. China still lost wars to France and Japan. This showed the country was not yet strong enough to defend itself.
