He was the primary force behind the Heidelberg School movement. This movement is also known as Australian impressionism. Roberts used his influence to encourage artists to capture the national life of Australia. He focused on the unique qualities of the Australian landscape and its people. His work helped establish a distinct artistic identity for the young nation.

To achieve his vision, Roberts utilized the technique of en plein air painting. This term refers to painting outdoors in the open air rather than in a studio.

By working outside, he could study the specific effects of light, heat, and distance. He often established artists' camps on the outskirts of Melbourne to facilitate this. One camp was at Box Hill, which was easily reached by the local railway. Another camp was located at the bayside suburb of Mentone. At these camps, Roberts taught impressionistic techniques to others, including his protege Arthur Streeton.

The Heidelberg School was characterized by several distinct stages and collaborative efforts. Roberts helped found the Box Hill artists' camp alongside Frederick McCubbin. In 1888, he also rented a studio in Grosvenor Chambers in Melbourne. This was the city's first purpose-built complex for art studios. Roberts actually consulted on the architectural design of the building. He wanted to ensure the lighting was ideal for professional painters. This studio helped him become one of Melbourne's most fashionable society portraitists.

Roberts' artistic journey began with significant international training. He was born in England in 1856 and moved to Australia in 1869. After working as a photographer's assistant, he returned to Europe in 1881. He spent three years studying at the Royal Academy Schools in London. During a trip to Spain in 1883, he met artists like Laureano Barrau and Ramon Casas. These encounters introduced him to the principles of impressionism. He returned to Australia in 1885, equipped with the latest European art trends.

A major milestone occurred in 1889 with the 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition. This was Australia's first self-consciously avant-garde art exhibition.

The name referred to the 9 by 5 inch dimensions of the wooden cigar box lids used as surfaces. These lids were supplied by the manager of Sniders & Abrahams. Roberts was the exhibition's main contributor, displaying 63 different impressions. While some critics dismissed the style as a mere fad, the event is now a landmark in art history. It established the Heidelberg School as the vanguard of Australian art.

Roberts is perhaps best known for his massive "national narratives."

One famous example is "Shearing the Rams," completed in 1890. This painting depicted the wool industry, which was Australia's primary export at the time. Another significant work is "The Big Picture," a commissioned piece from 1903. This enormous painting provided a visual representation of the first Australian Parliament. The commission for "The Big Picture" was one thousand guineas plus expenses. These works helped define how Australians saw their own history and labor.

Beyond his paintings, Roberts' legacy includes his advocacy for national institutions. He was the first person to push for Australia to have its own National Portrait Gallery. His influence extended through his leadership in the Buonarotti Club, a bohemian artists' society. In this club, he helped establish a selection panel to provide constructive feedback to exhibitors. Even his personal life intersected with his craft, as his wife, Elizabeth, was an expert maker of picture frames. Roberts' life and work remain central to the study of Australian cultural development.
