He also painted portraits of many different people. He even asked for a National Portrait Gallery in Australia.

Roberts used many different ways to create his art. He often set up artists' camps in the bush. One camp was at Box Hill near Melbourne. Another camp was at Mentone on the beach.

At these camps, he studied the light and the distance. He taught other artists how to use these new techniques. He also worked in a studio at Grosvenor Chambers. He helped design the building so the light would be perfect. This helped him become a very popular portrait painter.

His journey as an artist began a long time ago. He was born in England in 1856. His family moved to Australia in 1869. He worked as an assistant to a photographer in Melbourne. Later, he went back to Europe to study art. He spent three years at the Royal Academy Schools.

In Spain, he learned about impressionism from other artists. He brought these new ideas back home to Australia. This helped change how people saw Australian art.

In 1889, Roberts helped organize a famous art show. It was called the 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition. The name came from the size of the wooden lids used. The artists painted on small cigar box lids.

Roberts showed 63 different paintings at this event. Other artists like Charles Conder and Arthur Streeton also joined. Some critics did not like the new style at first. However, the show is now a major part of history. It showed the world that Australia had its own art style.

Roberts is remembered for his large and famous paintings. One is called "Shearing the Rams," made in 1890.
