He is widely regarded as the founding father of Czechoslovakia. He served as the nation's first president from 1918 to 1935. Masaryk believed that social problems often came from ignorance. He argued that a scientific approach could find correct solutions. By studying the underlying causes of conflict, he hoped to educate the public. He wanted to move people away from apathy toward active, informed citizenship.

Masaryk was born in 1850 in Hodonín, Moravia.

At that time, Moravia was part of the Austrian Empire. He grew up in a working-class family. His father, Jozef Masárik, was a Slovak carter and coachman. His mother, Teresie Masaryková, was a Moravian cook. Masaryk pursued a deep education in Europe. He attended grammar school in Brno and Vienna. He earned a doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1876. He also studied in Leipzig with famous scholars. Later, he became a professor of philosophy at Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague.

His early political career focused on reforming the existing empire. He served in the Austrian Reichsrat between 1891 and 1893. He also served there from 1907 to 1914. During this time, he belonged to the Czech Progressive Party. He initially wanted to turn the Austro-Hungarian Empire into a federal state. However, the outbreak of World War I in 1914 changed his goals. He decided that Czech and Slovak independence was necessary. He went into exile in December 1914 to organize this cause.

During his exile, Masaryk traveled across the globe. He visited Western Europe, the Russian Empire, Japan, and the United States. He worked to build connections that would support a new nation. In London, he even opened an office in Piccadilly Circus. The office featured maps and slogans to attract public interest. He also helped establish the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia. This was a military force that fought against the Central Powers. By 1918, the legion had grown to about 40,000 members.

He traveled with his protégés, Edvard Beneš and Milan Rastislav Štefánik. This group is often called the Triumvirate. They met with President Woodrow Wilson and Secretary of State Robert Lansing. Their negotiations led to the Washington Declaration. This document proclaimed the independence of the Czechoslovak state. Following the fall of Austria-Hungary, the new republic was recognized by the Allied powers.

Masaryk became the head of the provisional government in late 1918. He was formally elected president in November of that year. He was subsequently reelected three more times.

His leadership helped Czechoslovakia emerge as a stable, democratic state. He also championed progressive ideas, including feminist causes. These values were influenced by his wife, Charlotte Garrigue. He remained a central figure in European politics for many years.

Masaryk eventually resigned from the presidency in 1935 due to old age. Edvard Beneš succeeded him as president. Masaryk retired to the village of Lány.
