He was a military general and a statesman who shaped the modern French Republic. De Gaulle is most famous for leading the Free French Forces during World War II. He also established the Fifth Republic, which is the system of government France uses today. Because of his massive influence, many people consider him the greatest Frenchman of the 1900s. His life was defined by intense political crises and a deep commitment to national independence.

De Gaulle was born on November 22, 1890, in Lille, France.

He grew up in a conservative, Catholic family with a strong interest in history. His father, Henri, was a professor of history and literature. This background encouraged Charles to become a voracious reader of philosophy and history. By age fifteen, he was already writing essays about military leadership. He eventually chose to join the army to serve his country. This decision led him to the military academy known as Saint-Cyr.

His early military career was marked by both discipline and unique physical traits. Standing at 196 centimeters tall, he was often nicknamed "the great asparagus."

He served as a second lieutenant in the 33rd Infantry Regiment. During this time, his commander was Philippe Pétain, a man who would also become a major figure in French history. During World War I, de Gaulle served as a combat commander. He was wounded in battle and was eventually taken as a prisoner of war by German forces.

World War II brought the most critical moments of his leadership. In May 1940, during the German invasion, de Gaulle led an armored division in a counterattack. When the French government decided to sign an armistice with Germany, de Gaulle refused to accept it. He fled to England to continue the fight. In his famous "Appeal of 18 June," he urged the French people to resist the occupation.

After the war, de Gaulle implemented significant economic and political changes. He introduced a dirigiste economic policy, which meant the state had substantial control over the capitalist economy. This policy helped spark a period of massive growth called the "Trente Glorieuses," or the thirty glorious years.

Although he resigned from the government in 1946, he remained active in politics. He eventually returned to power during the crisis of the Algerian War in 1958. The National Assembly asked him to lead, and he subsequently founded the Fifth Republic.

This new system gave the President much stronger powers than before.

As President, de Gaulle pursued a policy known as "politics of grandeur." He wanted France to be a major world power that did not rely on others for security. This led him to withdraw from NATO's integrated military command. He also launched an independent nuclear strike force, making France the fourth nuclear power in the world.

He also worked to improve relations with other nations. In 1963, he signed the Élysée Treaty with West German leader Konrad Adenauer.

This treaty helped create a stronger European presence during the Cold War.

Despite his successes, de Gaulle's later years involved significant tension. He faced large protests from students and workers in May 1968. He also faced criticism for his views on the European Economic Community and his stance on the United States. De Gaulle eventually resigned in 1969 after losing a referendum regarding political decentralization. He died in 1970 at the age of 79.
