It began in 1940. Two men named William Hanna and Joseph Barbera made it. The shows focus on a cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry. Tom is a gray and white cat. Jerry is a small brown mouse. They often fight in a house. Tom tries to catch Jerry. Jerry uses his wits to stay safe. He is very clever and even strong. He can lift heavy things like anvils.

These cartoons use music to tell the story. A man named Scott Bradley wrote the music. He mixed jazz, pop, and classical styles. The music helps show the action and the humor. Most of the time, the characters do not talk. Instead, they make sounds like screams or laughs.
