The Brazilian yellow scorpion is a very important animal to study. It belongs to the Buthidae family of scorpions. This species is native only to Brazil. It is the most dangerous scorpion in South America. Many fatal cases in the region come from this animal.

This scorpion has a very specific way of working. It has eight pale-yellow legs and two pedipalps. Its trunk and tail are a darker yellowish brown. The tail is bulbous and has ridges or serrations. It often curves forward over its back. At the tip is a barb that injects venom. This venom can stop prey or act as a defense.

Scientists study these animals to keep people safe. Rogério Bertani is a specialist at the Butantan Institute. He works in São Paulo to learn about scorpions. He notes that these animals are moving into cities. This happens because of more buildings and less forest. More cities mean more places for them to live.

There are many facts about how they live. They eat insects like cockroaches in sewers or trash. They have a low metabolic rate. This means they can go months without any food. In Brazil, scorpion stings are very common. There were 12,000 stings in 2000. By 2018, that number grew to 140,000 stings.

Understanding the venom helps doctors treat victims. The venom contains a neurotoxin called TsIV. This substance affects the nerves and muscles. It can cause a fast heart rate or fever. It can also cause stomach pain or sweating. In very bad cases, it can affect the lungs. Deaths can happen between 1 and 14 hours after a sting.
