Tissues are a step between single cells and a whole organ. An organ is made when different tissues work together.

Plants have many kinds of tissue. Some tissue is called meristematic tissue. This tissue is made of cells that divide fast. It helps the plant grow longer or thicker.

You can find this tissue at the tips of roots.

Other plant tissues are called permanent tissues. These cells have a fixed job. They do not divide anymore. Some are simple tissues made of one type of cell. For example, parenchyma helps store food.

Other tissues are complex. This means they have many cell types working as one unit. Vascular tissue acts like a plumbing system. It includes xylem, which carries water. It also includes phloem, which carries food.

This system moves things up and down the plant.

Animals have four main types of tissue. These are connective, muscle, nervous, and epithelial.
