Histology is the study of tiny tissues.

Doctors use it to look for diseases. This special work is called histopathology. Animals have four main tissue types. These are muscle, nerve, connective, and epithelial tissue.

Plants also have different tissues. These include dermal, vascular, ground, and meristematic tissues.

To see these parts, scientists must prepare them. First, they use a fixative. A fixative is a chemical that keeps the tissue from changing. It also makes the tissue hard. Next, they must remove water from the sample. This is called dehydration. They often use wax to hold the tissue. This is called embedding.

They put the tissue in a block of paraffin wax. Then, they use a tool called a microtome. A microtome cuts the wax into very thin slices.

Finally, they use stains to add color. Stains help the tiny parts stand out under a microscope. One common way is to use H&E. This stain turns cell centers blue and other parts pink.
