Tirunelveli is a major city located in the southern part of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The geography of the region is shaped by the Agasthiyamalai hills. These hills are part of the Western Ghats mountain range.

Tirunelveli has a complex and ancient history spanning over two thousand years. During the Sangam period, from the 3rd century BCE to the 3rd century CE, the Early Pandyas ruled the area. The Chola dynasty took control of the region in the 11th century CE. Later, the Pandyas re-established their rule in the early 13th century. During the 13th and 14th centuries, Tirunelveli served as the secondary capital of Pandimandalam.
The transition to British rule involved significant conflict. In the mid-18th century, the British East India Company began establishing control. Local military governors, known as palaiyakkarars, resisted this influence.
Demographically, the city is large and diverse. According to the 2011 census, the population was 473,637 individuals. This made it the seventh-largest city in Tamil Nadu. The sex ratio was 1,027 females for every 1,000 males. The average literacy rate was quite high at 90.4%. Most residents speak Tamil, which is spoken in a distinct local dialect.
The economy of Tirunelveli relies on several different sectors. Agriculture and its allied industries are vital to the local economy. The city also features manufacturing sectors, including textiles, cement, and tobacco products. Information technology and service industries, such as education, are also important.
Cultural and historical landmarks define the character of the city. The Nellaiappar Temple is the most prominent historical monument.
