The geography of Tirana is defined by its surrounding landscape. The city is enclosed by various mountains and hills. To the east, the Dajti mountain rises prominently above the area.

Human history in this area stretches back to prehistoric times. The earliest recognized reference is found at the Cave of Pëllumbas from the Palaeolithic period. The Illyrians were the first major population to inhabit the region. They likely formed the core of the Illyrian kingdom of the Taulantii. This kingdom was centered in the hinterland of Epidamnus during classical antiquity. Following the Illyrian Wars, the Roman Empire annexed the territory.
Various empires and leaders shaped the settlement over many centuries. The Byzantine Emperor Justinian I built a castle between the 4th and 6th centuries.
The 20th century brought rapid political shifts and urban growth. After Albania declared independence in 1912, the country faced years of turmoil. The Serbian army occupied Tirana in 1912 during the Balkan Wars. However, the Congress of Lushnjë proclaimed Tirana as the temporary capital in 1920.

Political changes in the mid-20th century transformed the city's appearance. Following World War II, the city became the center for Albanian communists. From 1944 to 1991, the government built massive socialist-style apartment complexes and factories.

Since the fall of communism in the early 1990s, Tirana has seen intense development. University students led demonstrations in the early 1990s to demand political freedoms.
