Snyder uses a deep linguistic approach to his research. He speaks five different European languages. Furthermore, he can read ten different languages. This skill is essential for a historian in his field. It allows him to use primary sources directly. Primary sources are original documents from the time being studied. He accesses archives in Germany and across Central Europe. He believes that without certain languages, like Russian, a historian misses crucial information.

His academic journey began in the United States. Snyder was born in 1969 near Dayton, Ohio. His parents served in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic and El Salvador. He attended Centerville High School before going to Brown University. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science in 1991. Later, he became a Marshall Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford. He earned his D.Phil. in modern history in 1995. His thesis focused on the Polish Marxist Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz.
