Timbre

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Timbre is the unique quality of a musical sound. It is often called tone color or tone quality. This attribute allows listeners to distinguish between different sound sources. You can tell a choir is singing rather than a single instrument. You can even tell an oboe from a clarinet. Even if two instruments play the same pitch at the same volume, they sound different. This difference is entirely due to their timbre.

Two main physical characteristics govern how timbre works. The first is the frequency spectrum. This refers to the mix of different frequencies within a single note. The second is the envelope. The envelope is the overall amplitude structure of a sound. It tracks how the volume changes from the start to the end. This includes the attack, which is the very beginning of the sound. It also includes the decay, sustain, and release.

To understand the frequency spectrum, we must look at harmonics. Every musical note is a sum of many distinct frequencies. The lowest frequency is the fundamental frequency. This is the frequency that determines the pitch of the note. Other frequencies are called overtones. Harmonics are whole number multiples of the fundamental frequency, such as 2x or 3x. Partials are other types of overtones. Some instruments, like cymbals, produce inharmonic tones. These do not follow the same simple patterns.

The envelope also shapes how we recognize a sound. The attack is the prefix or onset of a sound. For example, a piano has a very specific attack when a hammer hits a string. A trumpet has a characteristic blast from the player's lips. If you remove the attack, the instrument becomes harder to identify. Musicians use the ADSR model to describe this. ADSR stands for attack, decay, sustain, and release.

Historically, the names for timbre have changed often. Hermann von Helmholtz used the German term Klangfarbe, meaning tone color. John Tyndall proposed the English word clangtint. However, Alexander Ellis disapproved of these terms. He felt they were confusing because they had other meanings in English. Today, we use descriptive words for timbre. We might call a sound bright, dark, warm, or harsh. These words help us describe the frequency composition.

Composers have used timbre to change the impact of music. In the nineteenth century, Berlioz and Wagner focused on orchestration. Wagner used a variety of timbres in his "Sleep motif." In his opera Die Walküre, he moved through woodwinds, strings, and brass. This created a shifting palette of orchestral colors.

Later, Mahler used differentiated timbres in his Sixth Symphony. He passed repeated notes through a succession of instruments. He moved from horns and strings to trumpet, clarinet, flute, and oboe.

In rock music, timbre is also essential. Heavy metal relies on the heavily distorted timbre of electric guitars.

Scientists use complex models to study how we perceive these sounds. One idea is the tristimulus timbre model. This is similar to how we mix primary colors in vision. A sound has many partials, sometimes hundreds. This model reduces them to just three values. The first measures the weight of the first harmonic. The second measures the second, third, and fourth harmonics together. The third measures all the remaining harmonics.
