Cook took this leadership role after the company's co-founder, Steve Jobs, resigned. Before becoming CEO, Cook served as the chief operating officer (COO). He also held several other high-level positions within the company. His leadership has shaped Apple into one of the most valuable companies in the world.

Cook's career at Apple began in March 1998. Steve Jobs recruited him to join the company as senior vice president for worldwide operations.

Cook transformed how Apple managed its products and supplies. He closed many company-owned factories and warehouses. He replaced them with contract manufacturers to handle production. This change reduced the company's inventory from months down to just a few days. Cook also made smart, long-term investments in parts like flash memory. These deals ensured a stable supply for products like the iPod Nano, iPhone, and iPad. His focus on operations helped keep costs low and profits high.

As Cook rose through the ranks, he took on more responsibility. In 2009, he became the chief executive of operations while Steve Jobs was on medical leave. During this time, Jobs still made most major decisions. Cook was responsible for the day-to-day running of the company. When Jobs resigned in 2011, Cook officially became the CEO. Shortly after, in October 2011, Jobs passed away from complications related to pancreatic cancer. Cook then had to lead the company through a major period of transition. He moved away from the micromanagement style of Jobs. Instead, he implemented a more collaborative culture at Apple.

Under Cook's leadership, Apple experienced massive financial growth. Between 2011 and 2020, the company's revenue and profit doubled. The market value of the company grew from $348 billion to $1.9 trillion.

By 2025, Apple was ranked as the second largest technology company by revenue. Cook also manages a large executive team. In 2012, he made significant changes to this team. He reorganized roles for leaders in software, design, and services. These changes helped reduce rivalries between executives and improved how the company functioned.

Cook's influence extends far beyond the walls of Apple. He has sat on the board of directors for Nike since 2005. He also serves on the board of the National Football Foundation. Additionally, he is a trustee of Duke University, which is his alma mater.

Cook is also a known philanthropist. In March 2015, he announced his plan to donate his fortune to charity. His personal net worth was estimated at $2.6 billion by Forbes in December 2025. He has also been recognized on the Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.

Cook is also active in political and social discussions. He has advocated for cybersecurity, national manufacturing, and environmental preservation. In 2014, he became the first CEO of a Fortune 500 company to publicly come out as gay. He has met with many world leaders to discuss technology and trade.

These meetings include leaders like Narendra Modi, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Pedro Sánchez. He has also engaged with U.S. political figures. In 2025, he visited President Donald Trump at the White House. During this visit, he presented a gold-based glass plaque. He also announced $100 billion in new U.S. investments for Apple.

Finally, Cook's work involves navigating complex global relationships. He has traveled to China to meet with government officials. These trips involve managing Apple's business and digital stores in the region. He has also spoken about the importance of user privacy. Cook believes that the stockpiling of personal data can feel like surveillance. He often pushes for laws that protect sensitive data, especially for children. His career shows how a leader must balance business growth with social responsibility and global politics.
