Most tilapia live in warm freshwater. They like shallow streams, ponds, and lakes. Some can even live in brackish water. This is water that is a little bit salty.

These fish are very hardy. They can live in many different conditions. Some tilapia live in the Salton Sea. That water is 30% saltier than the ocean! Tilapia also have a special way to care for babies. They are mouth-brooders. This means they carry eggs and young fish in their mouths. This keeps the babies safe for several days.

Tilapia are very important for food. They grow fast and eat plants or algae. This makes them easy to farm. People call them "aquatic chickens" because they are so easy to raise.
