Napoleon was the leader of France during these wars. He did not always give Étienne big jobs. This was because Étienne was friends with other generals. However, Étienne proved himself during the Battle of Wagram. During this battle, he led a very bold attack. He organized his soldiers into a huge, three-sided shape. This shape is called an infantry square. It helped break the enemy lines. Napoleon was very happy with this brave move.
