Many years ago, different groups ruled the area. The Mongols took control in the 1200s. Later, the Ming dynasty gave Tibet more freedom. In 1720, the Qing dynasty began to rule Tibet. The Qing leaders let the Dalai Lama lead religious life. The Dalai Lama is a very important leader.

In 1912, the 13th Dalai Lama said Tibet was free. But things changed in 1950. The People's Republic of China sent its army into Tibet. In 1951, a treaty was signed. This treaty said China and Tibet would rule together.

Some fighting broke out in 1956. In 1959, the 14th Dalai Lama had to flee. He went to live in India. The CIA helped him escape. The CIA also gave money and weapons to Tibetans for a few years. This help ended in the 1970s. Today, many Tibetans live in other countries. They still work to make Tibet independent again.
