Most modern tiaras have a semicircular shape. They are usually made from gold, silver, or platinum. Jewelers decorate them with pearls, cameos, or many gemstones. Some use patterns like stars, flowers, or leaves. Other designs show butterflies or dragonflies. They can contain thousands of diamonds. This makes them some of the most expensive pieces of jewelry.

There are many different styles of tiaras to learn about. A bandeau looks like a ribbon or a hairband. A kokoshnik is a massive wall of gemstones. Its shape comes from a traditional Russian headdress. A circlet goes all the way around the head. The fringe is a trim of diamonds that can also be a necklace. Some tiaras are part of a parure. A parure is a matching set of jewelry. This might include a necklace, earrings, and bracelets.

The history of the tiara goes back a very long time. The name actually comes from ancient Persia. It used to describe high-peaked head-dresses for Persian kings. Later, Greeks and Romans used gold to make wreath shapes. In the 1800s, Napoleon and his wife Joséphine made tiaras very popular. They wanted the French court to be the grandest in Europe. Because of this, many royal houses still own tiaras from that time. One example is the Swedish cameo tiara.

Rules for wearing tiaras have changed over the years. In the past, many people thought only titled women could wear them. Now, any woman can wear one to "white tie" events. This is a special dress code for formal occasions. Traditionally, young women waited until they were married to wear them. On their wedding day, they often wore a tiara from their own family. In the 21st century, these old rules are not followed as strictly.

Today, tiaras are still used for very special moments. They are often seen at royal weddings or coronations. Queen Elizabeth II had a very large collection of them. She was often seen wearing them at state occasions. Some tiaras are so old and valuable that people wear copies. This is done to keep the real gems safe. Interest in these beautiful objects has even increased again recently. Many royal families in Europe and beyond still cherish their collections.
