The Tiangong space station is a permanently crewed laboratory in low Earth orbit. 

Tiangong functions through a sophisticated modular mechanism. Unlike first-generation stations, which were single-module outposts, Tiangong is a third-generation modular station. This means multiple components are launched separately and assembled in orbit. This method improves reliability and reduces development costs. The station relies on the Chinese Docking Mechanism to connect its parts. This system is based on the APAS-89/APAS-95 technology developed by NASA and Russia. Once docked, the modules create a single, pressurized environment for the crew. 
The station is currently composed of three primary modules. The Tianhe core module is the central hub. It houses the guidance, navigation, and orientation control systems. It also provides life support, main power, and propulsion for the entire station. The Tianhe module includes living quarters for three crew members, a kitchen, and a toilet. 

China developed Tiangong through a planned multi-step process. This is known as the "Third Step" of the China Manned Space Program. The agency gained vital experience from two earlier precursors, Tiangong-1 and Tiangong-2. These earlier labs helped test docking and resupply technologies. The construction of the permanent station began with the launch of Tianhe on 29 April 2021. 

Scientific research is the primary mission of the station. CMSA has tentatively approved over 1,000 experiments to be conducted in orbit. The station contains 23 experimental racks within its pressurized environment. 

Beyond pure science, Tiangong serves as a tool for education and outreach. The station hosts space lectures and popular science experiments. These lessons are designed to inspire students in science and technology. During the Shenzhou 13 and 14 missions, astronauts conducted lessons that included Q&A sessions with schoolchildren. 
Tiangong is deeply connected to broader goals of deep space exploration. By mastering rendezvous technology and regenerative life support, China builds capacity for future missions. The station also acts as a testbed for next-generation orbit transportation vehicles. CMSA is even considering the possibility of space tourism in the future. This would involve commercial activities led by the private sector to bring cost-effective innovations to space. As a permanent human presence in orbit, Tiangong helps humanity understand how to live and work far from Earth.
