Thyreophora is divided into two major subgroups or clades. The first major group is Stegosauria, which includes the well-known stegosaurs. The second major group is Ankylosauria, which includes the heavily armored ankylosaurs.

In both of these groups, the forelimbs were much shorter than the hindlimbs. This body shape is especially noticeable in the stegosaurs. While some early ancestors moved differently, stegosaurs and ankylosaurs are thought to be obligately quadrupedal. This means they walked on all four legs all the time.

The history of naming this group involves many different scientists. A researcher named Nopcsa first used the name Thyreophora in 1915. Later, in 1998, Paul Sereno defined the group as a specific clade. He defined it as all genasaurs more closely related to Ankylosaurus than to Triceratops.
