This substance gives thyme its special flavor.

Plants make thymol through a set of steps. This way of making it is called biosynthesis. It starts with a part called geranyl diphosphate. Then, it changes into something called gamma-terpinene. Finally, the plant turns it into thymol.

People use thymol for many things. It is an antiseptic. This means it helps kill germs. People use it in mouthwash to help with gums. It is also used to clean skin. Long ago, the Blackfoot Native Americans used wildflowers to treat wounds.

Thymol helps bees too. It stops mold and mites in bee colonies. It is a safe tool for plant care. It works as a pesticide. A pesticide is a way to stop pests. It breaks down fast in soil and water. This makes it a low risk to the earth.
