It serves as the headquarters for the Thrissur district. The city is the third largest urban agglomeration in Kerala. This follows Kochi and Kozhikode. Nationally, it ranks as the 21st largest city in India. The Government of India classifies Thrissur as a Tier-2 city. It sits in the midland region of Kerala. It also extends into the Palakkad plains. The city is located north-west of Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital.

The geography of Thrissur is shaped by its unique terrain. The city is built around a hillock called Thekkinkadu Maidanam. This hill is the second highest point in the city. The Vilangan Hills is the highest point.

From this hill, the land gradually flattens. It leads into the Thrissur-Ponnani Kole Wetlands. These wetlands are highly productive but also threatened. They act as a natural drainage system for the city. Water from the wetlands flows through rivers into the Laccadive Sea. This natural process helps keep the city safe from major flooding.

The city sits near the center of the Indian tectonic plate. Because of this, there is very little volcanic or seismic activity. The ground is mostly composed of Archaean gneisses and crystalline schists.

Thrissur experiences a tropical monsoon climate.

The seasons are divided into several distinct periods. Summer lasts from March to May. This is the hottest time of the year. High heat and humidity can make the days uncomfortable. The southwest monsoon follows from June to September. This season brings heavy showers to the region. On average, there are 124 rainy days in a year. The average annual rainfall is approximately 3000 mm. After July, the rainfall levels begin to decrease. October and November represent the retreating monsoon season. Winter lasts from December through February. It is cooler and more windy due to the Western Ghats. During winter, the days are generally dry and less humid.

The history of Thrissur spans thousands of years. Prehistoric megaliths and dolmens suggest occupation from 1000 BCE to 500 CE. The city was once the capital of the Kingdom of Cochin. It served as a contact point for many global groups. These included the Greeks, Romans, Persians, and Arabs. Later, the Portuguese and Dutch had influence in the area. In 1710, the Dutch helped the Cochin royal family recapture the city. Thrissur rose to great importance under Maharaja Sakthan Thampuran. He ruled the Kingdom of Cochin from 1769 to 1805. He made Thrissur his capital and a major commercial hub. He invited Syrian Christian families and Brahmins to settle there. This helped build the city's economy.
