It sits bordering the Laccadive Sea within the Ernakulam district of Kerala. The city is also frequently called Ernakulam. As of 2011, the Kochi Municipal Corporation served 677,381 people. The larger Kochi urban agglomeration covers 440 square kilometers. This area holds over 2.1 million inhabitants. This makes Kochi the most populous metropolitan area in the state of Kerala. It is classified by the Government of India as a Tier-II city.

The city's development is managed by several specific groups. The Kochi Municipal Corporation has governed the city since 1967. Two other statutory bodies oversee its growth. These are the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA). Kochi is also part of the Greater Cochin development region. These organizations help manage the complex needs of a large coastal city.

Kochi's history is deeply tied to the global spice trade. In ancient times, the port of Muziris was the main center for spices. Muziris was located somewhere north of Kochi, likely near Kodungallur. Around 1341, massive flooding of the Periyar River destroyed the port of Muziris. This disaster caused Kochi to rise as a new, vital trading center.

For centuries, traders from Rome, Persia, Arabia, and China visited the region. The city earned the nickname "Queen of the Arabian Sea" because of this importance.

European powers eventually competed for control of the port. The Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral established a settlement in 1500.

From 1503 to 1663, the Portuguese ruled Fort Kochi, also called Fort Emmanuel. This was a difficult period for local religious communities due to the Inquisition. In 1663, the Dutch took control of the area from the Portuguese.

The Dutch later ceded the territory to the United Kingdom. The region eventually became a princely state under British influence.

The city is famous for its unique transportation and infrastructure. Kochi is the only city in India with a water metro system. This is the world's largest electric boat metro transportation infrastructure. The city also successfully tested Kerala's first seaplane service. Even the airport is a world leader in green technology. The Cochin International Airport is the first in the world to operate entirely on solar energy.

Kochi is a major destination for global tourism and culture.
