Thrips are tiny, slender insects that play many roles in nature. Most of these insects are only about 1 mm long.

They have long bodies and unique, feathery wings. These wings have a fringe of tiny bristles. Scientists have described about 7,700 different species of thrips. Some thrips are helpful, like those that pollinate flowers. Other thrips are pests that can damage important crops.

Flying is a very special task for a thrips. Their fringed wings are not built for normal flight. Instead, they use a method called clap and fling.

They clap their wings together to create lift. This creates a pattern of air movement near the wings. This allows them to move even though they fly weakly. Their mouthparts are also very unusual and asymmetrical. This means the parts are not the same on both sides.

They use one part to cut into a plant. Then, they use a tube to suck up the food. This feeding often leaves silvery or bronze scars on leaves.

People have known about thrips for a long time. The first recorded mention of them was in the 17th century. A priest named Philippo Bonanni made a sketch of them in 1691.

Later, a scientist named Linnaeus named the group Thrips in 1746. In 1836, Alexander Henry Haliday suggested the order name Thysanoptera. This name comes from Greek words meaning "tassel wing." Heinrich Uzel published the first big book on them in 1895. He is often called the father of thrips studies.

Thrips can be found in many different environments. Some species live in the rainforests of eastern Australia.

One specific thrips is the only pollinator for certain trees there. Other thrips are famous for being pests in greenhouses. They can grow into huge swarms very quickly. This happens because they can reproduce asexually. They can also carry over 20 different plant viruses.

It is amazing how much thrips do for our world. Many species are pollinators that help plants make seeds. They carry pollen grains on their backs as they fly.

Some thrips are even predators that eat tiny mites. This can actually help farmers manage other pests. They are a vital part of many ecosystems. Whether they are eating fungi or helping flowers, they are always busy. Even though they are small, their impact is quite large.
