Jackson recorded the songs in Los Angeles in 1982. He wrote some songs himself. He did not use paper to write them. Instead, he spoke the words into a recorder. He sang from memory in the studio.

The music has many different sounds. Some songs are pop or R&B. Other songs have a rock sound. The song "Beat It" has a famous guitar part by Eddie Van Halen.
