He lived a long time ago. He was born in 1624. He studied medicine at Oxford. Later, he earned a medical degree from Cambridge.

Sydenham was a very busy writer. He wrote many books about sickness. One book was called *Observations of Medicine*. This book was used as a guide for doctors for two hundred years. Because of this, people called him the "English Hippocrates." He also discovered a sickness called Sydenham's chorea. He gave the name *pertussis* to whooping cough.

He had a new way of helping people. He believed doctors should watch how a sickness looks and acts. He thought every sickness had its own type. He also believed doctors should be very kind. He once told a student to read a book called *Don Quixote*. He believed a doctor should always do their best for their patients. He even said that sometimes, the best thing to do is nothing at all. He wanted to make medicine simple and clear for everyone.
