In 1921, he found a way to help car engines. He added a chemical called tetraethyl lead to gasoline. This stopped engines from knocking. Companies called this new fuel "Ethyl." However, lead is toxic, which means it can harm living things. Many people got sick from lead. Even Midgley got lead poisoning. He once showed that the fuel was safe by breathing in its vapor. Later, we learned that lead in the air caused many health problems.

Midgley also helped make Freon. These are chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs. CFCs are gases used in fridges and air conditioners. They were safer to use than older gases that could explode. But CFCs caused a different problem. They harmed the ozone layer in the sky.

Midgley won many awards for his work. He held more than 100 patents. A patent is a legal right to an invention. In 1940, he became disabled by polio. He died in 1944. His inventions changed the world in big ways.
