His early professional training involved several medical apprenticeships. At age thirteen, he worked with John Cooke and later Thomas Chandler in London. At sixteen, he attended Sydenham College, a low-cost anatomy school. He later studied at Charing Cross Hospital under Thomas Wharton Jones. Although Huxley won a gold medal for anatomy and physiology at age twenty, he never completed his final exams. This meant he did not obtain a formal university degree.

However, his deep knowledge and exam successes allowed him to join the Royal Navy.

At age twenty, Huxley served as an assistant surgeon and marine naturalist aboard the HMS Rattlesnake.

The ship embarked on a voyage of discovery to New Guinea and Australia in 1846. During this time, Huxley focused his research on marine invertebrates. He made significant discoveries regarding the classification of these organisms. For example, he united the Hydroid and Sertularian polyps with the Medusae. He named this new class Hydrozoa.

He observed that these creatures shared a specific structure consisting of two cell layers enclosing a central cavity. This work helped clarify the relationships between many groups of animals.

Huxley's anatomical expertise extended to vertebrates and paleontology. He studied the relationship between apes and humans, a topic that was highly controversial at the time. By comparing the fossils of Archaeopteryx and Compsognathus, he correctly concluded that birds evolved from small, carnivorous dinosaurs. He also solved complex biological puzzles, such as identifying Appendicularia and Ascidians as tunicates. These organisms are now recognized as a sister group to vertebrates within the phylum Chordata. His ability to link different species through physical structure revolutionized biological understanding.
