At the heart of Theosophy are several important ideas about how the world works.

Theosophy is a complex system of thought and belief.

Theosophy is built upon several core metaphysical ideas. One central concept is monism. Monism is the belief in a single, divine Absolute. The movement uses an emanationist cosmology to explain the universe. This means the world is a reflection of that one Absolute.
Central to these teachings is the concept of the Masters.
The modern movement began in New York City in 1875.
History shows that the movement has faced several changes. After Blavatsky died in 1891, a schism occurred. William Quan Judge led the Theosophical Society in America. This group split from the international organization. Later, Katherine Tingley led a community called Lomaland in California.
Today, the Theosophical Society maintains a global presence. It has a membership of roughly 26,606 people. These members live across 70 different countries. In the United States, there are over 3,550 members.
The impact of Theosophy extends to many other fields. It helped encourage cultural pride in South Asia. Many prominent artists and writers have been influenced by it.
