People study how folks believe.
Some people study how others believe.
These thinkers look at many different things. They study how people act in groups. They also look at how people think.
This work started a long time ago. It grew in Europe in the 1800s.
Scholars use many tools to learn. They use history and science to help. This helps us understand the world.
It is a way to learn about each other. We can see how we are alike.
Religious studies is the study of religion.
It is hard to define what a religion is. Some say a religion must have a belief in a god. Others say a religion is defined by what it does for people. It might help a group stay together. Some scholars say the word "religion" is a Western idea. They feel it might not fit all cultures.
Religious studies is the study of religion from a historical or scientific view.
There are many ways to define what a religion is. Some thinkers use a monothetic approach. This means they look for one key thing that every religion must have. One way is to look for a core belief, like a god. This is called a substantive definition. Another way is to look at what religion does for people. This is called a functional definition. For example, it might unite a community. Some scholars use a polythetic approach instead. They make a list of traits that are common to many religions. No single trait must be in every single one.
This field grew from many different ideas.
Many famous thinkers have helped build this field.
Some scholars argue about the word "religion" itself. They say it might be a Western idea.
Religious studies, sometimes called religiology, is the academic study of religion. It approaches the subject from historical or scientific perspectives. This field does not try to prove if a specific belief is true or false. Instead, it seeks to describe, compare, and explain religious phenomena. Scholars emphasize empirical and cross-cultural views to understand how religion works. This is different from theology. Theology attempts to understand the supernatural based on traditional religious accounts. Religious studies remains objective and independent of any particular religious viewpoint.
To study religion, scholars use many different academic tools. They draw upon disciplines like anthropology, sociology, and psychology. They also use philosophy and the history of religion. Anthropology of religion looks at the basic human needs that religion fulfills. Cultural anthropology focuses on the specific cultural aspects of religious life. Sociology might examine how religion affects social structures. Psychology looks at the individual experience of faith. By using these diverse methods, the field attempts to make religion intelligible to the world.
Defining "religion" is a complex task with no single consensus. Many scholars use a monothetic approach to find a definition. A monothetic definition seeks one essential element that all religions must share. There are two types of monothetic definitions. A substantive definition looks for a specific core, such as a belief in a god. A functional definition looks at what religion does for humans, like uniting a community. Other scholars use a polythetic approach. This method creates a list of characteristics common to many religions. In this view, no single trait must be present in every single religion.
Some scholars argue that the term "religion" itself is problematic. They suggest the word might be too Western-centric. This idea is sometimes called intellectual imperialism. Some argue that the concept is forced upon non-Western cultures. For instance, the scholar Russell T. McCutcheon noted that many studied peoples have no equivalent term. The Sanskrit language, for example, lacks a direct word for "religion."
The history of this field is quite long, even if the academic discipline is relatively new. Interest in studying religion dates back to ancient figures like Herodotus. During the Middle Ages, Islamic scholars like Ibn Hazm studied various world religions. In the twelfth century, Muhammad al-Shahrastani wrote the first history of religion. However, religious studies as a modern academic field emerged in 19th-century Europe. This happened as scholars analyzed the Bible and translated Hindu and Buddhist texts.
Many famous thinkers helped shape the intellectual foundation of the field. In 1902, William James examined religion through a psychological lens. Max Weber studied religion from an economic perspective in his famous work. Émile Durkheim, a father of sociology, explored religion in his 1912 book. In the United States, the field is often called the "History of religion." This tradition is linked to the University of Chicago and the work of Mircea Eliade. By the 1960s and 1970s, the term "religious studies" became common worldwide.
Today, religious studies is a global academic discipline. It provides knowledge that is useful in a globalized world. Understanding different faiths helps people in professional and interpersonal contexts. It also helps people understand sectarian tensions and religious violence. While the field faced budget cuts in the 1980s, it has since grown. It now integrates with other disciplines to create modern programs of study. The goal remains to provide training for conducting deep inquiry into the subject of religion.
