For a long time, Thebes was the capital of Egypt. This means it was the main seat of power for the kings. The kings were called pharaohs. Many pharaohs ruled from this city during the New Kingdom.

The city was split by the river. On the east bank, people built grand temples. On the west bank, they built a necropolis. A necropolis is a large place for tombs.
