He lived in a busy New York City alley. This place was called Hogan's Alley. The boy spoke in a funny slang. He even wrote his words on his shirt. This was a way to poke fun at ads.

Outcault, the artist, used word balloons for speech. This helped change how comic strips look today. The character was also very popular for making things. People put his face on many items. They made buttons, toys, and even cracker tins.

Two big newspapers fought to print his stories. They were the New York World and the New York Journal. This fight was so big it gave us a new term. People called it "yellow journalism." This meant news that was made to be loud and exciting. It helped sell more papers to readers.
