In the story, d'Artagnan meets three incredible musketeers. Their names are Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. People often call them "the three inseparables." They become very close friends with d'Artagnan. The plot begins when d'Artagnan travels to Paris in 1625. On his way, he meets a man who insults his horse. This leads to a fight where d'Artagnan is beaten. He also loses his letter of introduction to Monsieur de Tréville.

This letter was needed to join the musketeers.

Writing this book was a very interesting task for Dumas. He claimed the story came from old manuscripts. He said he was inspired by a book from 1700. That book was written by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras. Dumas found it while researching the history of Louis XIV. He pretended the story was a recovered piece of history. This made the reading experience feel like a real drama.
