A man named Robert Stephen Rintoul started the magazine. He was a reformer from Scotland. He launched the first issue on 6 July 1828. Rintoul wanted to create a perfect newspaper. He liked to have absolute power over what was written. He wanted the editor and the owner to be the same person. This became a long tradition for the magazine. In his first thirty years, the magazine had a liberal-radical outlook. It was known for being respected and fair in its criticism.
