The Metamorphosis is a famous story written by Franz Kafka. It is a novella, which is a short book. This story is very important in literature. Many people around the world study it today. It tells a strange and sad tale. The story follows a man named Gregor Samsa.

Gregor is a traveling salesman who works hard. He earns money to pay his father's debts. One morning, he wakes up to a huge change. He has turned into a "monstrous vermin." This means he is now a giant insect. He is stuck on his back in bed. He cannot move or leave his room easily. He feels very alone in his new body.

Kafka wrote this story many years ago. It was first published in 1915. It appeared in a journal called Die weißen Blätter. Later, it was printed as a book in December 1915. The book was part of a series called Der jüngste Tag. The story is about 70 printed pages long. This was the longest story Kafka finished in his life.

Gregor's family lives with him in their apartment. His father, mother, and sister are all there. His sister, Grete, is his main caretaker at first. She brings him food that is rotten. Later, the family must all find new jobs. They lose the money Gregor used to earn. His father even throws apples at him. One apple gets stuck in Gregor's back.

Many smart people have different ideas about the story. Some say it is about a father and son. Others think it shows how people feel left out. A writer named Vladimir Nabokov had his own view. He thought the story was about an artist. He believed the sister, Grete, was the cruelest person. Grete changes from a girl to a young lady. The story ends with the family feeling relieved.
