The Leopard is a famous Italian novel that explores a world in transition.

It tells the story of the Salina family during the Risorgimento. This was a time of great political change in Italy. The story follows Prince Fabrizio Corbèra as his social world shifts. He is a noble man who enjoys studying the stars. He also spends time with his large Great Dane named Bendico. The book captures how old ways of life can fade away.

Through this family, we see how society moves from one era to another.

The story moves through different chapters that span many years. It does not follow a simple, straight timeline. Some chapters happen only weeks apart, while others jump forward by decades. In the beginning, the Prince leads his family in religious rituals. He also notices the changing landscape of his Sicilian home. He sees how new leaders, like Giuseppe Garibaldi, arrive on the coast. The Prince watches as the old Kingdom of the Two Sicilies begins to change. He even notices how imported roses struggle in the tropical heat. This shows how hard it is for old things to survive in new settings.

Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa began working on this idea in the 1930s. He was a member of an old princely family in Sicily. He wanted to write a story based on his great-grandfather, Don Giulio Fabrizio Tomasi. At first, he planned for the story to take place in just one day. However, the book grew into a much larger work. He started writing more seriously after a trip in 1954. He worked on the chapters at his desk, often spending time alone. He finished a version of the first chapter by June 1955.

Writing the book was a long and difficult journey for the author. He sent his work to a publisher called Mondadori in 1956. They rejected his manuscript that December. After that, he wrote more chapters and sent them to other people. Sadly, Tomasi was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1957. He died in Rome on July 23 of that year. His widow helped get the book published by Feltrinelli in November 1958. It became a massive success and the top-selling novel in Italian history.

It even won the prestigious Strega Prize in 1959.

Many people still talk about this book today because of its deep meaning. It shows the clash between the old nobility and the rising middle class. For example, a man named Don Calogero Sedara gains wealth through business. His daughter, Angelica, becomes a central part of the family's changing life. The book also became a famous movie in 1963. This film was directed by Luchino Visconti and starred Burt Lancaster. Even the newspaper The Guardian named it a great historical novel. It remains a powerful way to understand the history of Sicily.
