The Lancet

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Lancet is a famous medical journal. A journal is a weekly book for experts. It was started in England in 1823. A surgeon named Thomas Wakley founded it. He named it after a lancet. A lancet is a small tool used in surgery. Thomas wanted to teach people about medicine. He also wanted to fix problems in healthcare.

The journal shares new research. It also shares news and stories. It is very hard to get into. The journal only accepts 5% of the papers sent to it. This means most papers are not picked. Experts check the work first. This is called peer review. This helps make sure the facts are right.

Sometimes, the journal makes mistakes. It has had to take back some papers. This happens when the facts are not true. The journal works hard to learn from these errors. Today, it has many users. It also helps people learn about health in poor countries. Richard Horton has been the leader since 1995.
