Thomas Eakins made this work in 1875. It shows a doctor named Dr. Samuel D. Gross. He is a seventy-year-old professor. He is teaching a group of medical students. The painting shows a real surgery. Dr. Gross is helping a young man with a bone problem.

Many people find the painting very real. It shows a surgical theater from the 1800s. At that time, doctors did not always use clean tools. This was before they used a way to stop germs. The painting shows the blood from the work. This was very shocking to people back then. One critic even said it was horrible but fascinating.

Eakins put himself in the art. You can see him at the edge of the scene. He is sketching or writing in a book. A woman in the middle looks very upset. She might be the mother of the boy. This painting is a big part of medical history. It shows how surgery became a respected job. Today, it is kept in a museum in Philadelphia.
