The Emergency in India was a very intense time for the nation. It lasted for 21 months from June 1975 to March 1977. During this period, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi took much more control over the country. She said there were threats to India from both inside and outside. Because of these claims, President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declared a state of emergency. This meant the usual rules of government changed quickly. The government used Article 352 of the Constitution to make this happen.

This new state of emergency changed how the country worked every day. The Prime Minister gained the power to rule by decree. This allowed her to make decisions without the usual checks. Elections were cancelled during this time. Many people lost their civil liberties, which are the basic rights of citizens. The government also used censorship to control the news. This meant the press could not report everything they wanted.

Before the Emergency, Indira Gandhi had become very powerful. Between 1967 and 1971, she gained a huge majority in Parliament. She led the Indian National Congress party with great strength. In 1971, she led India during a war with Pakistan. This war helped create the new nation of Bangladesh. She was very popular with many people, especially the poor. Her slogan was "Garibi Hatao!" which means "Abolish poverty!".

Many people disagreed with her growing power. A leader named Jayaprakash Narayan, also known as JP, became a famous critic. He called for a "total revolution" to fix Indian society. He wanted to restore democratic institutions. Other leaders also protested against the government. In the courts, a judge named Jagmohanlal Sinha ruled that Gandhi had misused government tools during her election. This ruling meant she could not hold her seat in the Lok Sabha.

Life during the Emergency was very difficult for many citizens. The government arrested more than 100,000 people. These people included journalists and political opponents. Some laws, like the Maintenance of Internal Security Act, made it easy to arrest people. Even the electricity to major newspapers was cut off. Sanjay Gandhi, the Prime Minister's son, led a campaign for vasectomies. The Emergency finally ended on March 21, 1977. This period remains a major part of India's history.
