Because of this, the President signed an order. This order gave Gandhi much power. She could make laws by herself. She could even stop elections. Many people lost their rights. The government arrested many people who disagreed with her. Over 100,000 people were put in jail. These people were often journalists or political rivals. The news could not report the truth. This was because the government controlled the press.

A leader named Jayaprakash Narayan spoke out. He wanted a "total revolution." He asked people to change society in a peaceful way. He also led protests against the government. Before the Emergency, the government had made tough laws. These laws let the state arrest people easily. This period ended in March 1977.
