The primary content of the paper involves complex economic topics. It provides detailed reports on the Indian economy and international finance. Readers can follow changes in share prices through its pages. It also tracks the prices of commodities, which are basic goods like crops or metals. By covering these areas, the paper explains how money moves globally. This information is essential for anyone interested in the financial world.

To reach its large audience, the paper uses a massive distribution network. It is published simultaneously from 19 different cities across India. These cities include major hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. Other locations include Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad. The list also features Lucknow, Jaipur, Nagpur, and Chandigarh. It reaches even more places like Pune, Patna, Ranchi, Indore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Kochi, and Goa. This wide reach ensures the news travels throughout the entire country.

The history of the publication began in 1961. P. S. Hariharan served as the founding editor when it first launched. Following him, D. K. Rangnekar led the editorial team from 1964 until 1979. During the 1980s, editors included Hannan Ezekiel and Manu Shroff. The 1990s saw leadership from Jaideep Bose, T. N. Ninan, and Swaminathan Anklesaria Aiyar. In 2004, Rajrishi Singhal and Rahul Joshi managed the paper. Rahul Joshi later returned to lead from 2010 to 2015. Today, Bodhisattva Ganguli serves as the current editor.

Global readership numbers show how important this newspaper has become. In 2012, it was the second-most widely read English-language business newspaper in the world. Only The Wall Street Journal had a larger readership at that time. During that period, the daily readership exceeded 800,000 people. More recent data from the Audit Bureau of Circulations provides specific figures. In the latter half of 2022, the paper's circulation averaged 269,882 copies. These numbers demonstrate its significant influence in the global media landscape.

The Economic Times has expanded far beyond a simple daily print paper. In June 2009, the group launched a television channel named ET Now. In 2018, they introduced ET Prime, which is a member-only storytelling platform. Shishir Prasad served as the editor for ET Prime in 2022. They also provide a portfolio management tool called ET Portfolio. Other specialized ventures include ETHRWorld and ETBrandEquity. These different branches allow the company to reach people through many different media types.

Language diversity is another way the organization has grown. In 2017, they launched the ET Hindi website for business news in Hindi. The company expanded even further in 2022 with a major digital push. They launched websites in seven other Indian languages to reach more people. These new sites include ET Gujarati, ET Marathi, and ET Bengali. They also added ET Tamil, ET Malayalam, ET Telugu, and ET Kannada. This expansion connects financial news to many different linguistic communities across India.
