It serves as a major player in the American television landscape. Currently, the network is controlled by Nexstar Media Group. Nexstar holds an 81% ownership interest in the company. The name \"CW\" is a combination of the first letters of its two founding owners. These companies were CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. The network aims to reach a specific group of viewers. It primarily targets people between the ages of 18 and 34.

\n\nThe network was formed through the merger of two predecessor networks. These older networks were called The WB and UPN. Both of these stations shut down in September 2006. The CW was created to succeed them by combining their resources. At the start, the network used a mix of existing shows and new content. It carried thirteen programs from its predecessors during its inaugural fall schedule. Seven series came from The WB, such as Smallville and Gilmore Girls. Six series came from UPN, including America's Next Top Model and WWE SmackDown!\n\nThe history of the CW begins with changes to television laws. In April 1993, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ended the fin-syn rules. These rules had previously stopped networks from owning the rerun rights to their own shows. Because of this change, Warner Bros. Television and Paramount Television decided to start their own networks. This led to the launch of The WB and UPN in January 1995. For many years, these two networks acted as rivals. The WB focused on young women, while UPN targeted young men. However, both networks struggled to reach large audiences. Over eleven years, they lost a combined $2 billion.\n\nExecutives from CBS and Warner Bros. announced the merger on January 24, 2006. They hoped to create a fifth \"major\" broadcast network. The CW officially debuted on September 18, 2006. Its first two nights consisted of reruns and launch-related specials. The formal launch occurred on September 20, 2006. This night featured a two-hour premiere of America's Next Top Model.

This premiere was successful in the Nielsen ratings. It earned a 3.4 rating and a 5 share. It also placed fourth among adults aged 18 to 49.\n\nDespite early successes, the network faced several challenges during its first five years. Viewership declined during the 2007–08 season. This decline was partly due to the Writers Guild of America strike. In March 2008, the network underwent a corporate restructuring. It eliminated its comedy department and laid off about 25 to 30 employees. The network also attempted to lease its Sunday lineup to a company called Media Rights Capital. This arrangement was intended to help the network focus on its weekday prime time schedule. However, the Sunday shows performed poorly, averaging only 1.04 million viewers. The CW eventually scrapped this agreement in late 2008.\n\nThe network's programming strategy has also shifted over time. Between 2008 and 2011, the network focused its shows on women in the 18 to 34 demographic. This shift led to the removal of WWE SmackDown! in 2008. The network decided that SmackDown! targeted a predominantly male audience. By August 2017, the audience was evenly split between men and women. The network runs programming seven days a week. On Saturday mornings, it airs an educational block called One Magnificent Morning. This block is produced by the Hearst Media Production Group.\n\nThe CW is available to viewers in several different regions. In the United States, it uses flagship stations in New York City and Los Angeles. These are WPIX and KTLA. The network is also available in Canada through pay television providers. Some Canadian viewers can see the signal through stations near the U.S. border. These broadcasts are subject to simultaneous substitution laws from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. The network is also available in northern Mexico. This happens through affiliates near the Mexico–U.S. border, such as KUSI-TV
