It is a major part of the American TV landscape. Nexstar Media Group owns most of the network with an 81% stake. The name CW comes from the first letters of its two founding companies. These were CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. The network aims to reach a specific group of people. It mostly targets viewers between the ages of 18 and 34.

The network formed by combining two older stations. These were called The WB and UPN. Both of these networks shut down in September 2006. The CW took their place as a new way to watch shows. To start, the network used many shows from the old stations. It also created new content made just for the CW. One of its first big premieres was America's Next Top Model.

In the early 1990s, television rules began to change. The FCC ended rules that stopped networks from owning reruns. This led Warner Bros. and Paramount to start their own networks. The WB and UPN both launched in January 1995. They were rivals for many years. The WB focused on young women while UPN focused on young men. By 2006, these two networks were struggling to make money. Leaders decided to merge them into one stronger group.

The CW officially debuted on September 18, 2006. Its first two nights featured reruns and special launch shows. The formal launch happened on September 20, 2006. That night, the seventh cycle of America's Next Top Model premiered. The network carried thirteen shows from its predecessors at first. These included hits like Smallville and 7th Heaven. It also had shows like WWE SmackDown! from UPN.

The network is available in many different places. It runs programming seven days every week. On Saturday mornings, it airs educational shows called One Magnificent Morning. People in Canada can watch the CW through pay television. Some people in northern Mexico can also see the signal. This happens through stations located near the U.S. border. In the U.S., the network has flagship stations in New York and Los Angeles. These help carry the signal to many viewers.
