They started in Dublin in 1962. Paddy Moloney, Seán Potts, and Michael Tubridy formed the group. Most of their music used instruments instead of singing. They played the uilleann pipes, which are a type of Irish bagpipes. They also played the tin whistle and the flute.

The band helped people all over the world hear Irish music. They worked with many famous stars. These included Madonna, Sting, and the Rolling Stones. They even worked with an astronaut! Catherine Coleman played the flute on the International Space Station.

The group was very successful. They won six Grammy Awards. In 1989, the Irish government gave them a special title. They called them "Ireland's Musical Ambassadors." This meant they represented Irish music to other nations. They played on the Great Wall of China. They also played in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The band's leader, Paddy Moloney, died in 2021. This brought an end to the group.
