It is widely considered one of the most significant poetic works of the twentieth century. The poem is a book-length composition made of 109 canonical sections. These sections are called cantos. Pound worked on this massive project from 1915 until 1962. Because of its complexity, many readers find the poem formidable and difficult. It does not follow a single, linear plot like a traditional story. Instead, it functions as a vast collection of historical, economic, and cultural fragments.\n\nThe mechanism of the poem relies on a technique of fragmentation and allusion. Pound viewed human experience as a series of disconnected pieces. He compared these pieces to iron filings scattered on a mirror. While the filings are separate, a magnet can pull them into a specific shape. In The Cantos, the poet uses historical data and diverse languages to create this shape. The text includes Chinese characters and quotations in many European languages. The poem moves through abrupt changes with very little transition between ideas. This creates a dense texture that often requires scholarly commentary to fully understand.\n\nThere are several ways to view the structure of the work. Some critics, like R. P. Blackmur, argued the poem is complicated rather than just complex. They suggested it can appear chaotic or structureless to a casual reader. However, others see a formal plan underlying the text. Pound once compared the form of a poem to a tree. As he gained new knowledge, he added new branches to the poem. He also suggested a sequence involving a \"live man\" descending into a world of the dead. This descent is followed by a \"repeat in history\" and a \"magic moment\" of metamorphosis.\n\nThe history of the poem involves many revisions and different publication stages. Pound began discussing a long poem around 1905, but actual writing started in 1915. His earliest versions of the first three cantos were eventually abandoned. He moved away from a narrative voice that addressed the ghost of Robert Browning. In 1925, he published a smaller version titled A Draft of XVI Cantos. Much of the material was redistributed or changed over the decades. The complete collection of cantos was not published together until 1987. A bilingual edition of uncollected drafts, called Posthumous Cantos, appeared in Italy in 2002.\n\n

The poem explores many distinct themes and historical stages. One major theme is the role of the patron in culture. Pound highlights Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, a 15th-century lord and patron of the arts. Malatesta built the Tempio Malatestiano, a landmark Renaissance church. Pound also explores the ethics of economics and governance. He uses moral tales to contrast real wealth creation with the exploitation of the money supply.

In Canto XIII, he introduces Confucius to represent ideal social order based on ethics. These sections use specific historical figures to examine how societies function.\n\n

Specific imagery and symbols provide depth to the poem's many parts. Pound uses an opposition between darkness and light to convey meaning. The moon often represents creativity and the artistic impulse. The sun is frequently linked to political and social activity.

The poem also features various mythological stories, such as the transformation of Dionysus into dolphins. In the early cantos, Pound uses a Latin version of the Odyssey to discuss the \"dead\" past. This helps him explore how history illuminates the present. He also includes memories of World War I and the Russian Revolution to show major breaks in history.\n\n

The Cantos connects many different fields of human study. It weaves together classical Mediterranean culture with East Asian traditions. Pound incorporates details from medieval Italy, Provence, and seventeenth-century England. He even includes information about Africa obtained from Leo Frobenius. The poem acts as a bridge between literature, history, economics, and politics. It attempts to merge different aspects of light and human experience into a unified whole. By studying these connections, readers can see how the poet tried to map the entire scope of human civilization.",
