The name started after a game in 1882. Australia won a match on English soil. A British newspaper wrote a funny notice. It said English cricket had died. It said the ashes would go to Australia.

A man named Ivo Bligh vowed to win them back. He led his team to Australia. England won most of those games. He was given a small urn. It is made of terracotta, which is a type of clay. People think it holds ashes from a wooden cricket bail.

The original urn is very delicate. It stays in a museum at Lord's. It has traveled to Australia only three times. The teams now play for a crystal trophy. This trophy is shaped like the tiny urn. The winner of the series holds the Ashes. If the series is a draw, the current winner keeps them. This big contest happens about every two years.
